Overcome Imposter Syndrome as a Life Coach

Updated: Jul 20

Are you riddled with feelings of self-doubt, condemned to be constantly comparing yourself to those "better than you", feeling as though you don't belong in your own dream career despite your professional training and natural gifts?

If you are feeling heavy in the realization that the above is true, then you may be experiencing imposter syndrome yourself. In all honesty, it would be unusual if you didn't experience imposter syndrome at some point or another during your career as a growing coach. In fact, despite the phenomenon having a sneaky way of making us feel entirely isolated in our fears, studies actually show that an estimated 70% will experience an episode of imposter syndrome at least once in their life.

What does it look like when Imposter Syndrome makes an appearance in your life?

  • Feelings of anxiety, fear, and self-doubt

  • Neglecting your hard-earned knowledge and skill

  • Forcing yourself because you feel as though you're not getting 'there' fast enough

  • Loss of confidence

  • Comparing yourself to 'Masters' of your trade

  • Forcing yourself to "Fake it until you make it"

  • Feeling like a fraud

How to Handle Your Imposter Syndrome

Try this journaling exercise today to gain clarity and bring your mind to ease

  1. Make a list of the top 3 people that you consider the best in your industry

  2. Next list out all of the things that make them the "master" of your trade. For example, they have a big audience, clients, money, influence, etc;

  3. What do you have that they don't have? Intuition, life experience, training, heart... What would you do differently in their position? What is something unique to you?

  4. What is one thing you can start doing to move closer to mastering your trade? This could start small: join a training class, practice daily meditations, or spend 30 minutes a day working on personal development.

Take your time considering these questions, stay centered in your abilities and what you are truly capable of becoming. The desire wouldn't be in your heart if you weren't capable of achieving it!

As you practice this exercise you will learn which thoughts are serving you and begin to identify those that aren't. Perception is not fact and it is possible to re-write your imposter syndrome story and feel differently as you build your skills and business as a Spiritual Life Coach.
